The 1921 Club is an alumni group celebrating the legacy of Somerville rowing at Oxford. The name honours the pioneering achievements of Somerville’s rowers, who began competing in 1921, marking the start of a tradition of excellence.
For many Somervillians rowing was more than just a sport, it was an opportunity to make lifelong friends, develop a passion for health & fitness, and build leadership skills. The 1921 Club was founded by alumni of Somerville College with the aim of offering support to Somerville College Boat Club to ensure that all current students have the opportunity to share in this experience.
The 1921 Club has four main goals:
Foster a lifelong community among Somerville college alumni who have rowed and been involved in rowing at Oxford, promoting camaraderie, networking, and continued friendship.
Generate funds to ensure the long-term future of the committee and to provide SCBC with the resources to achieve it’s rowing goals and to support in the purchase of the necessary equipment to achieve these goals.
Preserve and celebrate the rowing heritage of Somerville College by organising reunions, events, and other activities that engage both alumni and current rowers.
Support and promote rowing at Somerville College, providing assistance to the current Somerville College Boat Club through financial, advisory, and mentorship opportunities. Specifically supporting the SCBC committee with financial management, long-term goal planning, asset management, equipment purchases and sponsorship.
